FAQs

Q?

There are many orphanages in Haiti. What is different about Learn4Life Children’s homes?

A.

  • The need is so vast that Haiti needs all the help it can get. After the earthquake of 2010 the number of orphans and homeless children increased by 50%. With additional health epidemics of cholera, malaria and other preventable deaths the rate is increasing on a regular basis.
  • The key distinctive of our program, is to have homes that are safe and secure, with no more than 10 children supported by a house mother and a helper, to function like a “regular” home. In addition our trained tutors help all children with their home work, helping them to succeed in school. We provide a balance diet, basic medical care and activities to build their social skills. Ethical and moral values based on biblical principles are essential for their development and we are connected to a local church for them to attend and for accountability for the ministry.
  • We plan to build “clusters of homes” in the 20 acres of land that we are about to receive for the ministry. In addition a Vocational Center and a medical clinic are in the development plans.

Q?

How can I help the ministry of Learn4Life in Haiti?

A.

  • There are many avenues for you to get involved and make a big impact in the life of an orphan child in Haiti:

  • Sponsor a child, with a monthly donation of just $40
  • Sponsor a whole Children’s Home for a monthly donation of $500 or $5,000 a year.
  • Donate for our building project (any amount will go far!)
  • Donate for clean water projects in the community
  • Donate for the unsponsored children fund
  • Travel with us to Haiti (trips are usually planned in July-August and January - March)
  • Volunteer to teach English or life skills (Computer learning, programming, carpentry etc.)
  • Make a one time of memorial gift to the ministry

Q?

What percentage of my donations will go directly to the children’s home?

A.

  • It is our commitment to send 100% of the donations for the benefit of the children.
  • Our US Based staff works on a volunteer basis and we also receive some donations specifically designated to maintain the website and administrative costs of the ministry.
  • We are a 501 (c) (3) non-for-profit organization and all your donations are tax    deductible.

Q?

How do I sponsor a child? How and when do I communicate with him/her?

A.

  • Today you can make a huge difference in the life of a child for less than the cost of a cup of coffee a day. Your next step is to select a child to sponsor. Select your sponsorship preferred method of payment and fill the Sponsorship Form.
  • You will receive a child packet with picture and profile as well as a form to include your picture and your first letter to the child. We encourage sponsors to travel with us to Haiti if possible to meet their child and establish a close relationship.

Q?

Who can sponsor a child?

A.

  • Our goal is for every child in our children’s homes to have a sponsor or group of people to sponsor them. Many children have lost both parents, or live with a relative who can’t provide for them, or were abandoned and are all by themselves. There are so many risks and abuse that they can suffer. If they are not in a children’s home, they may become “slaves” working day and night for their food or fall in the hands of human traffickers.
  • You can be a sponsor if you want to make a difference in the life of a child. Your commitment is to encourage him/her with your letters and your donation of $40/month for at least one year. We encourage sponsors to help until the child completes high school.

Q?

How does the sponsorship works?

A.

  • We at Learn4Life will connect a child with a sponsor to enable the sponsor to establish a nurturing relationship with the child. Sending letters, cards, pictures and gifts are different ways to connect with the child.
  • We facilitate all communications between you and your child. We also deliver your care packages and letters either in person during our frequent trips to Haiti, or by UPS.
  • We provide a holistic program for all children in our care, thanks to your monthly contributions. We also provide a safe and caring family like environment for them to feel loved. This includes: room and board, education, tutoring, basic medical care. Our family life environment also addresses emotional, social skills and spiritual care. Each children’s home has well trained loving and dependable staff.

Q?

If I decide to get involved, how long is my commitment?

A.

  • We aspire to earn your trust through financial responsibility and reports on the progress of your sponsored child, for you to have the opportunity to bless a child for as long as you want. Typically children start at age 3 and stay with us until they finish high school at age 18-19.
  • In order to be effective and avoid the need to constantly find new sponsors, we suggest your commitment to be at least for one full year.

Q?

How and when is a child admitted to your program?

A.

  • There are hundreds of children abandoned and living on their own in Haiti. Frequently the local authorities find them and through Social Services they begin to find a home for them. Churches also play a role in in temporarily receiving orphans and then finding suitable homes for them. Our goal is to accept children in our children’s homes to benefit from our programs. Capacity is our only limitation. We immediately try to find sponsors for the child or the entire new home to provide for them on a long term basis.
  • We also have a waiting list from the community around us and depending on the need and situation we accept them when we add capacity.
  • These children are usually between the ages of 3 & 12, and are living in unacceptable conditions without a responsible adult to care for them. Some of them become “slaves” working in homes in deplorable conditions just to have some food to eat.
  • Each child case is evaluated by a social worker and all the necessary documents required by the Haitian authorities are obtained prior to admittance, to avoid issues or problems of custody.
  • Children will stay in our program until they complete high school and are in University or employed.
  • We have programs to train them with life skills (age appropriate) to become self sufficient in the future.
